Students already use AI assistants, so a ban mostly punishes the honest ones. Allowing them lets teachers set the rules: show your prompts, explain the answer in your own words, and use the assistant as a tutor rather than an answer machine. Because homework is meant to build understanding, the question is how to design it so AI helps understanding, not whether to allow AI.

On enforceability: oral follow-ups work. A two-minute conversation about a submitted answer shows whether a student understands it, regardless of who typed it. Several schools already pair AI-permitted homework with short in-class explanations, which keeps the practice effortful without pretending detection software works.

Homework is practice, and practice only works when the student does the hard part. If an assistant writes the essay or solves the problem, the student skips the effortful retrieval that builds memory. Teachers cannot reliably tell AI-written work from student work, so the rules my opponent proposes are unenforceable at scale. Restricting AI for take-home work and using it in supervised class time protects the practice.
